INTERNET SERVICE SCAM ALERT

Scam Alert_250x210

The Johnston Police Department has become aware of a recent scam circulating the metro area. The scammers are claiming to be from CenturyLink and are calling to ask questions about service and if there have been any recent outages. The scammers will then inform the resident they are trying to do upgrades as they knew another provider was working in the area to install fiber.

The scammer informs the resident they need to update their router over the phone or lose internet service. The callers are asking the residents to go to ultraviewer.net. DO NOT do this! This website allows someone to remote into your computer to take over. Don't become a victim.

The Johnston Police Department offers these tips to avoid scams:

  • Don’t trust caller ID readings – scammers often spoof names and numbers to make them appear like a local caller.
  • Let numbers you do not recognize go directly to voicemail. And do not call unknown numbers back.
  • Hang up on anyone who threatens you with arrest, legal action, or seizure of your accounts.
  • Do not converse with anyone online that you do not know, and certainly do not share any personal photos or information of yourself.
  • Hang up if anyone directs you to pay using store gift cards, money wires or mailed cash. These tactics are often used because they are difficult to trace.
  • Do not download or visit a website that a scammer may ask about.

If you do receive a scam call, please contact the Johnston Police Department at 515-278-2345.
