The Johnston Police Department, Mayor and City Council commended Officer Petermeier with a Certificate of Commendation during the City Council meeting on Monday, September 20.

On April 4, 2021, Officer Petermeier was on patrol when dispatched to a local apartment for a stabbing.  Upon his arrival at the scene, he located a victim with a large stab wound to his back. Officer Petermeier recognized the severity and complexity of the injury, which could have been fatal if left untreated due to a possible punctured lung. Based on his law enforcement and military training, he took decisive action to clean the wound and apply a self-venting chest seal. This helped stabilize the wound and may have saved the victim’s life.

“Officer Petermeier’s ability to remain calm and handle this dynamic situation with professionalism and compassion is a shining example of our agency core values of Honor, Protection & Service,” said Police Chief Dennis McDaniel.  “This certificate recognizes your quick,  decisive, potentially lifesaving actions at a chaotic scene. The performance is a credit to the department’s community caretaking efforts and is in keeping with the uppermost traditions of selfless public service.”

Officer Petermeier has contributed significantly to the mission of the Johnston Police Department and the well-being of the community. Congratulations, Officer Petermeier, on this well-deserved recognition.
