The weekly yard waste collection continues every Monday and Tuesday (your regular garbage collection day) through Tuesday, November 24. Yard waste is only collected in Compost It! bags or brown paper lawn bags with a Compost It! sticker attached, by 6:00 a.m. on collection day. Tree debris must be bundled with a Compost it! sticker attached. Bags and stickers can be purchased at Johnston City Hall and locations around the metro.
Residents who have a large amount of yard waste on a regular basis, the Compost It! Premium Services program is available for an additional annual fee. Please contact the Utility Services Department at 515.727.7772.
As a resident, it is important to remember it is illegal to burn leaves, grass clippings, pine needles, garden waste and other organic debris within Johnston city limits. Please continue to use the Compost It! yard waste program through November 26. Compost It! provides curbside collection of yard waste. City code allows the burning of brush, sticks, branches, trees and shrubs on single-family and two-family residential properties when placed 50 feet away from a neighboring home.
Burning is not allowed in the public right-of-way or any public easement area. Property owners or tenants must be present at all times when open burning is taking place. Please remember to be respectful of neighbors who may enjoy fall weather and do not appreciate smoke blowing into their homes.
