Archery at Terra Park - Tuesday, July 17


Join Johnston Parks and Recreation for a beginner archery event at Terra Park from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m.! There will be two shooting shifts, one at 5:30 and one at 6:30. Pre-registration is required as only 10 participants will be able to shoot in each slot. This will be fun for the whole family, but children under ages 10 will be evaluated to see if they can shoot safely. 50+ Fun Night - Wednesday, July 18


Join in on the excitement during 50+ fun night on Wednesday, July 18 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Crown Point Community Center, located at 6300 Pioneer Parkway. The seniors will be playing hand & foot, dominoes, and pool. Refreshments will be served. The event is free and sponsored by the Johnston Senior Advisory Board. 
Camp Dodge Summer Concert Series - Thursday, July 19
Join Tony Valdez for Tony Valdez for latin, rock, funk and much more at 7:00 p.m. at Camp Dodge Pool Pavilion complex, 7105 NW 70th Avenue, Johnston. This is the last performance for the Summer Concert Series.

Friday Fishing Fun - Friday, July 20


Join Johnston Parks and Recreation for a free and fun fishing event at Terra Park from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tackle, bait, and snacks will be provided for everyone and rods will be provided for the first 10 participants who need them. All ages are welcome, those over age 16 will need an Iowa Fishing License. Please meet at the large shelter at Terra Park. Any questions can be directed to Landra Jo at 515-727-8091.

Movie in the Park - Friday, July 20


This movie has been rescheduled from Friday, July 13 to Friday, July 20 due to the weather that has moved into the area. Join the Johnston Parks & Recreation Department for a movie in the Park on Friday, July 20. "The Sandlot" will be shown, beginning at dusk at Dewey Park, located at 5225 NW 64th Place in Johnston. Bring your blankets and lawn chairs and enjoy the movie. Free popcorn will be provided. The movie is sponsored by the Johnston American Legion and the Johnston Lions.

Yoga by the Lake - Saturday, July 21


The Johnston Parks Department has brought yoga to Terra Lake and we want you to join in on the free hour of relaxation. Participants are encouraged to bring their own yoga mat and join professional Power Life Yoga instructor Megan Boler on Saturday, July 21 at 8:00 a.m. 

Fishing with a Firefighter - Saturday, July 21


Join the Johnston-Grimes Metropolitan Fire Department (JGMFD) on Saturday, July 21 at Terra Lake for a family, fun fishing event. Registration will begin at 9 a.m. inside Crown Point. There will be fishing poles and tackle for those to use at the event. Residents under sixteen (16) years of age can fish without a license.

We hope you come enjoy the following activities. We have indicated which activities will be inside and outside below.

Safety (inside/outside)
- Inside Crown Point, the Iowa DNR will provide safety tips when you are in and around the water.
- Outside, the JGMFD will provide a water rescue demonstration on Terra Lake. Narration will take place near fishing pier for participants to hear and view.

How to Fish (outside)
- On Terra Lake, the JGMFD will have stations set-up to teach you how to properly cast and the other necessary information you must know before fishing.

Species Booth (inside)
- Learn about the variety of fish species (large-mouth bass, channel catfish and bluegill) at Terra Lake and the regulations you must follow when fishing.

Bait Stations (outside)
- There will be two seperate bait stations set-up around the lake.

Raffle Drawing (outside)
- Businesses who have donated items will be raffled off between 11 to noon.

Lunch (outside)
- Hy-Vee will be serving hot dogs, chips and water from 11 a.m. to noon. Free will donations will be accepted by the Johnston Professional Fire Fighters Local 4835 and used to benefit the community.

Equipment Display
- There will be a Tower Ladder and Rescue Engine displayed in the parking lot. Ambulances will be available, depending on call volume during the event.

Movie in the Park - Thursday, July 26


Join the Johnston Parks & Recreation Department for a movie in the Park on Thursday, July 26. Ferdinand will be shown, beginning at dusk (beginning at approximately 8:30 p.m.) at Adventure Ridge Park, located west of NW 100th Street on Windsor Parkway.

Bring your blankets and lawn chairs and enjoy the movie. Free popcorn will be provided. The movie is sponsored by the Johnston American Legion and the Johnston Lions.

Older, Wiser, Livelier Seniors - Tuesday, August 7


The Johnston Senior group will be having an older, wiser, livelier event on Tuesday, August 7 at Jester Park Lodge. The program will feature the "Tale of Iowa’s Soldiers’ & Sailors’ Monument:, with lunch catered by The Radish. Following lunch, the group will travel downtown Des Moines for a drive-by of the Monument on the Capital Grounds. The group will then proceed to the Des Moines Art Center for a guided tour. Signup will be from Wednesday, July 25 through Friday, July 27, from noon to 1:00 PM. Cost is $10.00 per person. The event is restricted to the first 25 individuals and is sponsored by the Johnston Senior Advisory Board.

Birding - Friday, August 10


The Johnston Parks & Recreation Department is hosting a birding workshop for enthusiasts, beginning at 8:00 a.m. The workshop will be led by Dennis Thompson from the Des Moines Audubon. Appropriate clothing and footwear will be required as this will be a walking activity. A set of binoculars and a sense of adventure will be helpful. Those interested in attending can meet at the Terra Park shelter, located at 6300 Pioneer Parkway.

Sundae in the Park - August 12


Join the City of Johnston, Johnston Community School District, and Johnston Community Education on Sunday, August 12 for an evening of music and ice cream, with an extra sprinkle of fun! Come see what groups your child can become involved in outside of school and meet city leaders. A variety of youth organizations will be on hand providing information on youth activities. Walk through a JCSD school bus, hop into the cab of a city snow plow, explore a fire engine and sit shotgun in a Johnston police vehicle! All activities are open from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 12 on the grounds of Johnston Commons, located outside the Johnston Public Library. 

RipRoar Triathlon - Saturday, August 18


Join the next generation of triathletes as they complete in the RipRoar triathlon at Terra Park. Juniors will swim 50 meters, bike 2 miles and run 1/2 mile. Intermediates will swim 100 meters, bike 4 miles and run 1 mile. Seniors will swim 200 meters, bike 6 miles and run 2 miles. Click here to learn more or to register. 

Mayor's Run for the Trails 5K - August 25


Join fellow community members for the annual Mayor's Run for the Trails 5K. This a fun event that includes a short-sleeve (performance blend) shirt, post-race refreshments, and raffles prizes. There will also be a 1,000 meter fun run around the lake, which begins at 8:00 a.m. The 5K run/walk will begin at 8:15 a.m. The 5K run/walk will be chip timed this year. Iowa Dog Jog - Saturday, September 22


At the Iowa Dog Jog, you'll strengthen your bond and probably also make some new friends along the way! Pick your choice of 2K or 4K, and then enjoy a rockin' dog festival full of fun activities for you and your dog, such as paw-print painting, off-leash dog parks with separate areas for large and small dogs, visit with great vendors and rescue groups, dog contests (including a whip cream eating contest...for your dog, not you) and so much more.
