Flood Assistance Offered by FEMA
Polk County has now been added to the list of counties in Iowa eligible under the FEMA Individual Assistance Program which means disaster assistance money or direct assistance to individuals, families and businesses in an area whose property has been damaged or destroyed and whose losses are not covered by insurance is possible. This program is meant to help with critical expenses that cannot be covered in other ways. This assistance is not intended to restore damaged property to its condition before the disaster.
The process for applying is:
- Call 1.800.621.3362, TTY # 1.800.462.7585 or online at http://www.DisasterAssistance.gov
- Once an application has been completed the applicant will receive a reference number which must be used when visiting the DRC. If an individual goes to the DRC prior to submitting an application, they will be directed to a phone to do so prior to receiving assistance from the FEMA representatives at the DRC.
- The local Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) has been located at Logan Community Center, 1740 E. Garfield Street, Des Moines. The center will be open from 9:00 am – 7:00 pm until further notice. This includes Saturday and Sunday.
- Once the DRC is open, applicants must go to the DRC location and meet with FEMA who will help them obtain assistance they qualify for.
