Online CrimeReports Available

May 18, 2010 (Police)

The Johnston Police Department has joined CrimeReports.com as an extension of its commitment to community policing and goal to provide transparency in government. The online program provides up-to-date information on recent crime activity in the city and surrounding member communities.

The public can access the crime map through the city’s Web site. Once there, residents can view police activity in the city and see a listing of registered sex offenders. Viewers can also provide an anonymous tip on a specific crime or a general tip through the software, as well. All tips are directed to the Polk County Crimestoppers program and distributed to the appropriate law enforcement agency.

The service allows citizens to sign up for free e-mail alerts regarding crime experience in their neighborhood and know when events occur. This tool will not replace the E-LERT e-mail communication program currently used by the department. Residents and business owners wanting to receive timely information regarding crime prevention, scams, and more can register for E-LERT at www.cityofjohnston.com/departments/police/E-Lert.php.

Joining the program will enable the department to further enhance the exchange of information with the community. It will further our partnership in keeping our schools, neighborhoods and businesses safe. A safe community requires more than just a police presence; it requires information sharing and a strong police community partnership.” According to Police Chief Vaughn.
