Survey Results

Throughout November and early December 2015 we asked residents to provide positive and critical feedback on a variety of areas within city government, including police, fire, parks, library, public works, communication and community development. We are proud to report that our city departments consistently rank among the best in the country.

The scientific survey shows our community rated at or above the national average in 43 of 45 areas that were assessed.  The areas in which Johnston rated notably higher than the national average (a remarkable 20% or more above) are listed below:

  • Overall quality of City services (31% above national average)
  • Overall cleanliness of City streets (29% above national average)
  • Effectiveness of City communication with the public (28% above national average)
  • Walking and biking trails in the City (26% above national average)
  • Customer service from City employees (25% above national average)
  • Maintenance of sidewalks in public areas (24% above national average)
  • Overall image of the city (22% above national average)
  • Weekly curbside recycling collection (21% above national average)
  • Maintenance of city buildings (21% above national average)
  • Overall feeling of safety in the city (20% above national average)
  • Maintenance of city streets (20% above national average)

Nine out of 10 Johnston residents are satisfied or very satisfied with the quality of life in our community. Ninety-two percent of residents give the high approval, which is 19 percent higher than the national average in city quality-of-life rankings.

The scientific survey shows that 92% of residents are satisfied or very satisfied with the overall quality of police protection, 90% are satisfied or very satisfied with the overall quality of fire protection, 85% are satisfied or very satisfied with the maintenance of City parks, and 89% are satisfied or very satisfied with the Johnston Public Library.

City leaders are evaluating all of the feedback within the survey to better improve Johnston.  We learned that we should focus on three specific areas of improvement:  traffic flow, quality of City streets, and enforcement of property code violations.
