Library History
The Johnston Public Library was originally organized in 1988 as a branch of the Urbandale Public Library and was located in the Johnston City Hall. On July 1, 1992, the Johnston Public Library became independent to better meet the needs of our growing community. In 1994, a campaign began to raise support and funds to build a new library building for our expanding collection and programming. In 1999, the citizens of Johnston approved a bond issue to construct a 27,000 square foot state-of-the-art facility. The groundbreaking followed in April 2000, and on October 6, 2001, the Johnston Public Library held its Grand Opening for the new building at our current location at 6700 Merle Hay Road.

The Johnston Public Library has grown with the community. In the first year of the library’s existence, there were 728 cardholders and a circulation of just over 34,000 items. At the end of FY 2012/2013 the library had nearly 15,740 cardholders, and these cardholders checked out more than 312,197 items. The collection has grown from its origins in City Hall to approximately 81,295 items.

Currently, 74 percent of Johnston residents are library card holders at JPL. The library collection continues to diversify to reflect changing technology and meet the needs of the growing community. In addition to more traditional library materials, the library now offers downloadable e-books and audiobooks, e-music, and e-magazines, along with a wide variety of reference databases that are available 24 hours-a-day, 7 days-a-week at
