School Resource Officers

The School Resource Officer is one of our most important connections to the community and our young people. Beginning in the 2007 school year, the Johnston Police Department began an expansive partnership with the Johnston Community School District to provide a full-time police officer to act in the capacity as a deterrent to school policy violations, criminal activity, and school violence. These officers serve the law enforcement needs of more than 8,000 students and staff within the high school, two middle schools and five elementary schools.

For the 2015-2016 school year, Officers James Slack and Zach Grandon will serve as School Resource Officers. Officer Grandon will teach Code 411 to all fifth and seventh grade students in JCSD.  His time will be spent in Summit Middle School and the district's five elementary schools.  Officer Slack is primarily assigned to Johnston Middle School and Johnston High School.

The total student population of 8,000+ makes the Johnston Community School District the 13th largest district in the State of Iowa. Students in grades K-12 now have direct, and many times, onsite access to a law enforcement officer who is specifically trained to handle all types of school-related issues.
