Trees and Leaves

Trees & Yard Maintenance

City Ordinances require residents to maintain "that part of the public street right of way lying between the sidewalk or right of way line and the curb line, edge of pavement or edge of traveled way".

Maintenance includes:

  • Mowing and maintaining the grass. If the City determines the parking area or right of way can not be safely mowed with normal property owner equipment due to excessive slopes, the City will mow it.
  • Trimming trees. Trees need to be trimmed to an eight foot clearance above the sidewalk and a fourteen foot clearance above the street. The City reserves the right to charge the property owner for trees trimmed by City staff.

Leaf and Grass Composting/Burn Ban
The City of Johnston Ordinance 612 regulates burning within City limits. Most yard waste can now be disposed through the Compost It! program through the Metro Waste Authority.

Residents may leave yard waste curbside to be collected April through November. Yard waste should be bagged in brown paper bags with a $1 Compost It! sticker attached OR residents can purchase Compost It! paper bags for $1.55 each or bundles of five for $7.75. Stickers and bags are available at Johnston City Hall, Johnston Hy-Vee, Dahl's, and Johnston Ace Hardware.

  • Click here for more information about the Compost It! program from the Metro Waste Authority.
  • Questions about yard waste and/or the Compost It! program can be directed to the Metro Waste Authority at 244-0021 or online at www.mwatoday.com.

Compost It! Premium Services are now available in Johnston.  Click on the link at the top of this page to download a PDF version of the application form for premium services.
