Without control programs, the mosquito population would flourish and cause potential health and comfort problems. From a health standpoint, mosquitoes are known carriers of encephalitis, malaria, yellow fever and dengue viruses. Mosquito-borne diseases cause more than one million deaths each year around the world. Mosquito bites can also infect a pet with the deadly canine heart worm. Controlling mosquitoes also limits the number of mosquito bites caused while we try to enjoy the outdoors. A well-planned, integrated program involves stopping mosquitoes in both the larval and adult stages. Mosquitoes can migrate up to 15 miles, which overrides local larval control efforts. This results in the need for adult mosquito control. The City of Johnston actively sprays the entire city to help minimize the mosquito population during the months of May through September. Wilson Brothers is the current provider of our mosquito control services. Their program includes the following services:
The adulticiding will take place on Thursdays nights starting at 9:00 pm. Due to concerns about pesticide exposure, the city will maintain a list of residents who do not wish their property to be treated with pesticides. Complete the No Mosquito Spray Form each year and return to the Public Works Department. When added to this list the sprayer will be shut off approximately 200 feet from the property. This is the maximum distance that will be used in order to serve those residents who want the benefit and protection that the spraying provides.
