Mosquito Control Program

The control of mosquitoes is a major concern. Without control programs, the mosquito population would flourish and cause potential health and comfort problems.

From a health standpoint, mosquitoes are known carriers of encephalitis, malaria, yellow fever and dengue viruses. Mosquito-borne diseases cause more than one million deaths each year around the world. Mosquito bites can also infect a pet with the deadly canine heartworm.

Controlling moquitoes also limits the number of mosquito bites caused while we try to enjoy the outdoors.

A well-planned, integrated program involves stopping mosquitoes in both the larval and adult stages. Mosquitoes can migrate up to 15 miles, which overrides local larval control efforts. This results in the need for adult mosquito control. To view the City of Johnston's mosquito control program click here .

Each year from May through September the City of Johnston actively sprays the entire City to help minimize the mosquito population.

Wilson Bros. is the current provider of our mosquito control services.

Their program includes the following services:

  • Larviciding-this process treats standing water and kills the growth of young mosquitos
  • Adulticiding-this process is spraying a chemical mist into the air that kills adult mosquitos.

The Adulticiding will take place on Thursdays nights starting at 9:00 pm.

Due to concerns about pesticide exposure, the City will maintain a list of residents who do not wish their property to be treated with pesticides. You may request a form that you will need to fill out annually and return to the Public Works Department. When added to this list the sprayer will be shut off approximately 200' from the property. This is the maximum distance that will be used in order to serve those residents who want the benefit and protection that the spraying provides.
