Garbage, Recycling and Solid Waste

Artistic Waste Services, Inc began provides solid waste collection for all single and two-family homes in Johnston. Garbage bins are due curbside by 6 a.m. the day of pick up. Pick up for residents west of 86th street is Monday mornings. Residents who live east of 86th Street will have garbage picked up on Tuesdays. Residents may need to contact Artistic Waste Services Inc to arrange for pick up for some items such as bulky waste, appliances or other large items.

  • Stickers for extra garbage, bulky waste and appliances are available at Hy-Vee, Dahl's, City Hall and Artistic Waste (1817 W. Euclid).

Recycling and Yard Waste

    The City of Johnston also participates in the Metro Waste Authority's Curb It! Recycling and Compost It! Yard Waste programs. These services are provided through residents' property taxes and are available in all single and two-family homes in Johnston.

    Recycling

    Recycling is picked up curb side the same day as trash collection (Mondays for residents west of 86th Street, Tuesdays for residents east of 86th Street)

Yard Waste

Bagged yard waste can be left curbside April through November.  For yard waste to be collected, it must be bagged or bundled properly.  Residents can purchase Compost It! bags for $1.55 each or bundles of five bags for $7.75 at City Hall.  Residents may also use their own "kraft style" bag and place a $1.00 Compost It! sticker on each bag or bundle. Compost It! stickers and bags can be purchased at Dahl's, Hy-Vee, Johnston Ace Hardware and City Hall.

Hazardous Waste, Electronics Disposals, and Other Landfill Services

    Residents may use local landfills and services to dispose of items not included in regular solid waste removal. For information regarding rates, services, locations, and more,click here.
