Utility Services
The City of Johnston provides utility services including water, sewer, solid waste and recycling.
 The City of Johnston purchases its drinking water from Des Moines Water Works.The city provides billing and collection services and maintains the distribution system. Water rates reflect the costs associated with purchasing water and maintaining the distribution system.

The City of Johnston is a member of the Des Moines Metropolitan Wastewater Reclamation Authority. Waste water leaving your home is transported to the facility for processing.
Solid waste is collected every week. Solid waste/garbage bins should be placed at the curb by 6:00 a.m. on collection day. The city contracts with Waste Management for solid waste collection.
 The City of Johnston participates in the Metro Waste Authority Curb It! and Compost It! programs.The Curb It! recycling bin is placed at the curb every other week, following the calendar attached to the bin. Yard waste is collected each week during April - November.
