Vehicle Impound Release Information

Vehicles impounded by the Johnston Police Department are available for release Monday-Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. (excluding holidays).  Vehicle owners must provide state-issued photo identification at the Johnston Police Department, 6221 Merle Hay Road, Johnston, Iowa, to obtain a release form.  Impounded vehicles will only be released to the vehicle’s registered owner or title holder.

In some cases, additional documentation may be required before a vehicle is released.  For this reason, vehicle owners are encouraged to contact the Johnston Police Department’s administrative office prior to visiting the police department by calling 515-278-2345.

Once the vehicle owner has provided the proper documentation, a release form will be issued.  Vehicle owners may then retrieve the impounded vehicle at one of the private towing companies utilized by Johnston Police.  Vehicle owners are required to pay a $20 administrative fee (cash only), plus all towing and storage fees and no items may be removed from the impounded vehicle until all applicable fees have been paid. 

Neither the Johnston Police Department nor the City of Johnston have any involvement in the fees associated with towing and storage and neither entity receives any revenues relating to the impoundment of motor vehicles.
