Q: A potential employer has requested I provide them with my fingerprints in order to conduct a background investigation. Can I be fingerprinted by the Johnston Police Department?

A: Fingerprinting is provided free of charge to Johnston residents and employees of
Johnston business. Proof of residency or local employment is required. Please call (515)
278-2345 for a schedule.

Q: How can I obtain a copy of a police report and how much of the information is
available to me?

A: Reports are provided free of charge to crime or accident victims. Insurance agencies
or third parties are charged $5 for each report. The front page of the report is provided to
the requesting party. Release of additional information requires a subpoena in order to
protect the confidentiality of individuals in the case and ongoing investigations.

Q: Where is the Polk County Courthouse located?

A: The Polk County Court House is located at 5th and Mulberry in downtown Des
Moines, Iowa.

Q: My vehicle has been impounded, how do I retrieve it?

A: A release must be obtained from the Johnston Police Department. We recommend
calling (515) 278-2345 prior to arriving at the station to determine whether holds have
been placed on your vehicle (i.e. proof of valid insurance, registration or valid drivers
license). Once you have met the requirements of the impound, a release will be issued a
and you may proceed to the proper towing agency to retrieve your vehicle.

Q: I have lost my animal can the Police Department help me?

A: The Johnston Police Department contracts with the Animal Rescue League of Iowa to
pick up stray and deceased animals within the city. Residents are encouraged to call the
Police Department at (515) 278-2345 and determine if their animal has been impounded
by the ARL.

Q: What is Johnston's snow ordinance and how can I make sure I do not receive a
ticket?

A: Johnston's snow ordinance states that “vehicles shall not be parked or left standing on
any part of the right-of-way of a public street during anytime when snow removal
operations are in progress and before such operations have resulted in the removal or
clearance of snow or ice from such street or streets. The owner of the vehicle shall be
jointly responsible with the driver, if different person.” Failure to follow the prescribed
ordinance will possible result in a $25 civil citation issued to either the driver or owner of
the vehicle.

Q: I feel that the officer I was in contact with did not act in a respectful or
professional manner and I would like to file a complaint against that officer. How
do I do that?

A: Citizens may file a complaint by contacting Lieutenant Lynn Aswegan at 278-2345 to arrange an appointment to make the complaint in person.
