The City of Johnston has been designated a Tree City USA. As such, the city benefits from the many trees gracing the city's landscape. The Tree City USA program, sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation in cooperation with the USDA Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters, provides direction, technical assistance, public attention, and national recognition for urban and community forestry programs.
As a member, Johnston meets the four established standards:
- Tree board or department
 Tree planting information- Community forestry program with an annual budget of at least $2/capita
- An Arbor Day Observance and Proclamation
