Notice of Public Input Meeting, October 27, 2009:  At 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 27, 2009, a meeting to receive public input will be held at the Johnston Public Library, 6700 Merle Hay Road.  No plans have been drawn up at this time; this meeting will be to discuss ideas and vision members of the Johnston community have for the future of the city.  A flyer for the meeting is available.

Over the next year, the City of Johnston will be updating its 1998 Comprehensive Plan.  The Johnston Comprehensive Plan which addresses land use, parks, housing, transportation and infrastructure is a document that directs how the city will continue to grow and evolve over the next 10 to 20 years.

To assist the city in the updating process, the City Council has retained Hoisington Koegler Group Inc. (HKGi), a community planning and landscape architectural firm based in Minneapolis, MN to lead a consulting team.  Joining HKGi is Howard R. Green Company, a Johnston based engineering firm; Joe Urban, Inc., a market analysis firm and Northland Securities, the City’s public finance consultant.

Work on the plan update will be coordinated by Johnston ’s Comprehensive Plan Advisory Board.  Johnston residents and businesspersons will have a number of opportunities to be involved in the effort and to add their ideas to the plan.  The community engagement effort is expected to start with a public kick-off meeting in early October.  Information on the plan will be updated on the city’s Web site.

Since the 1998 plan was adopted the city has experienced tremendous residential and commercial growth resulting in a population increase from approximately 7,000 to 16,000 residents and an increase in property valuations from approximately $500 million to more than $1.6 billion, thus necessitating the need for a plan update.

HKGi was selected from seventeen planning firms which responded to the city’s Request of Qualifications.
