Comprehensive Plan

The City of Johnston Comprehensive Plan was adopted by the City Council on December 7, 1998. Since that time multiple amendments have been made to the document.  The full text and land use map of the current Comprehensive Plan, including amendments through February 2006 can be accessed here:

Merle Hay Road Redevelopment Study

The Merle Hay Road Redevelopment Study was adopted by the City Council on October 15, 2007.  This document explores the redevelopment possibilities of Merle Hay Road particularlily between NW 62nd Avenue and NW 66th Avenue.  Additional information is available here.

Northwest Area

The Northwest Area is that area southwest of Camp Dodge and west of NW 86th Street. This particular area lies north of NW 70th Avenue. A study was undertaken to further refine the Comprehensive Plan based upon existing development trends and policies of the City of Johnston. The City Council approved an amendment to the Comprehensive Plan on February 6, 2006. A copy of the map of the amendment is available here:

Beaver Ridge Area

On June 7, 2003, the City Council amended the Comprehensive Plans adding a section related to the landuses along the Beaver Ridge Area, the area along NW Beaver Drive from NW 66th Avenue to the northern City Limits. A copy of the text of the amendment is available here:

Parks and Recreation Element

On December 1, 2003, the City Council further amended the Comprehensive Plan amending the Parks and Recreation element of the Comprehensive Plan.

Updates and amendments to the Comprehensive Plan are reviewed by the Comprehenisve Plan Advisory Board. The Comprehensive Plan Advisory Board consists of 7 members, each having a 3 year term. The Comprehensive Plan Advisory Board meets on the 3rd Thursday of each month at 7:00 p.m. at City Hall.  Upon review by the Comprehensive Plan Advisory Board, updates and amendments are forwarded to the Planning and Zoning Commission and ultimately, the Johnston City Council who approves the updates and amendments.
