Building Department

Home Construction

The Building Department issues permits, enforces the building code, and provides guidelines for your building projects.

Electrical, Plumbing and Mechanical Registration

The City of Johnston requires that all electrical, plumbing and mechanical contractors be licensed through the state and registered with the Johnston Building Department. To register, complete a registration form and submit it with verification of your state license to the building department. There is no fee, but registration is required before a trade permit can be issued to a contractor.

Code Updates In Effect

On March 16, 2009, the Johnston City Council approved updates to the city building, residential, mechanical, plumbing and electrical building codes, including special provisions.  Please note that these changes do include a change in permit fees.

A permit is necessary to engage in construction/installation or change to any of the following:

  • Accessory buildings or structures
  • Buildings
  • Excavation/Grading or demolition
  • Monument, building, or temporary signs
  • Special Events including an Outdoor Sales Event, Seasonal Sales Event or Temporary Site Plans
  • Plumbing, mechanical, or electrical work
