Demographics/City Information

The City of Johnston has been experiencing tremendous growth in both the commercial and residential tax base the since the early 1990s.  In 2005, the City conducted a special census which indicated a 57% percent population increase from 2000, increasing from 8,649 in 2000 to 13,596 in 2005.  The City anticipates this growth to continue as new residential devleopments continue to devleop.

The following resources provide additional information and documentation on the City's growth:

Census Information - The following information has been provided by the United States Census Bureau:

Annual Reports - Annually the Community Development Department summarizes the growth and development the past calendar year.  These reports also include historical growth data.

Traffic Counts - The Iowa Department of Transportation collects traffic counts in the Johnston area every four years, in addition, the City has developed a growth scenario and traffic projections over the next 20 years.  The following provide additional information on traffic counts or traffic projections:

  • 2005 Traffic Projections Study PDF File - This study was prepared by Engineering Alliance, Inc. and ISU's Center for Transportation Research and Education and projected traffic and made geometric recommendations for the areas of the community west of NW 86th Street.
  • 2003 Growth Scenario Study PDF File - This study was prepared by City Staff and is the basis for the 2003 Traffic Projections Study .
  • 2003 Traffic Projections Study PDF File - This study was prepared by HR Green Company in 2003 and include traffic projections and traffic deficiencies over the next 25 years.
