ONE-CENT LOCAL SALES AND SERVICES TAX VOTE AUGUST 6

losst IMAGE_250X250_WEBSITE

On August 6, voters will decide if a 1% Local Option Sales and Services Tax will be added to eligible sales in Johnston. If approved, the sales tax rate would increase from 6% to 7%.

Based on the resolution adopted by the City Council, 50% or more of the revenue generated by the tax will be used to reduce the City’s portion of property taxes and the remainder will be applied directly to public safety expenditures, public infrastructure, public parks, sports, and recreational facilities and trails, and public library uses.

The one-cent sales tax is based on the point of retail delivery sales in communities that have approved the tax. If you shop, eat at restaurants or visit entertainment venues in Des Moines, Altoona or West Des Moines you are already paying the tax, but not receiving a benefit as a Johnston resident. These areas include Outlets of Des Moines, Wells Fargo Arena, Civic Center, Fairgrounds, Valley West Mall, Merle Hay Mall, and Valley Junction.

If the one-cent sales tax is approved on August 6, Johnston businesses will begin collecting the tax in January 2020, and property taxpayers will benefit from lower property taxes starting in July 2020.

Find your polling place or request an absentee ballot 5 at www.polkcountyiowa.gov/auditor.
