BE AWARE IF A SOLICITOR APPROACHES YOUR HOME

The Johnston Police Department advises residents to be aware of a group potentially in the area that has been identified recently in Bettendorf and North Liberty, Iowa. The group states they are taking funds or donations for soldiers. Please be aware that this is a scam and we do not want you to become a victim.

Any group looking to solicit funds in the City of Johnston is required to obtain a solicitor permit to go door-to-door for donations or business; per chapter 122 of the City code (www.cityofjohnston.com/citycode).

If a solicitor rings your doorbell and asks for funds, please remember the following options:

  • You do not have to answer the door if you are not aware of anyone stopping by your home. If they attempt to enter your residence, call the Johnston Police immediately
  • If you answer the door, ask to see their City of Johnston solicitors permit (another city permit is not valid for Johnston - they must have one specifically for Johnston)
  • Call the Johnston Police if they do not have a permit, so they can be properly advised of the appropriate actions for our community. The non-emergency number for the Johnston Police Department is 515-278-2345.
  • DO NOT attempt to get into a physical confrontation with them.
