Farmers Market - Tuesdays


The Johnston Farmers Market takes place every Tuesday from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the City Hall parking lot through October 9. Come check out our brand-new vendors and a wide selection of locally-grown produce, beautiful art, household items, garden accessories and delicious baked goods! Johnston City Hall is located at 6221 Merle Hay Road.

Pie Iron Dessert Night - Monday, June 25


Do you love pie and enjoying time with family? If so, bring the family and come to enjoy a night at Terra Park while making pie iron desserts. This is a free event and all supplies will be provided. The event is taking place between 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Terra Park shelter, located at 6300 Pioneer Parkway. Questions can be directed to Landra Jo at 515-727-8091.

Senior Music Night - Thursday, June 28


Do you enjoy tapping your toes to music – join the Johnston Senior Advisory Board on Thursday, June 28 from 1 to 4 p.m. at Crown Point Community Center, located at 6300 Pioneer Parkway. Gaylin Sudik & Friends will be playing live music so bring your dancing shoes or just listen to music while enjoying the free afternoon. Refreshments will be served. 
Camp Dodge Summer Concert Series - Thursday, June 28
Join 42 Romeo at 7:00 p.m. at the historic Camp Dodge Pool Pavilion complex, 7105 NW 70th Avenue, Johnston. This is the Iowa Army National Guard’s pop and classic rock band. It is also Military Heritage Night, so wear your favorite red, white and blue!

Yoga by the Lake - Saturday, June 30


The Johnston Parks Department has brought yoga to Terra Lake and we want you to join in on the free hour of relaxation. Participants are encouraged to bring their own yoga mat and join professional Power Life Yoga instructor Tori Hudson on Saturday, June 30 at 8:00 a.m. 
Camp Dodge Summer Concert Series - Thursday, July 5
Join Richard Arndt & The Brew, a rock, blues and bottle tonk band at 7:00 p.m. at Camp Dodge Pool Pavilion complex, 7105 NW 70th Avenue, Johnston. Come to celebrate the 100th birthday of the Army Warrant Officer Corps.

Coffee with a Cop - Friday, July 6


Join the Johnston Police Department invites you to Coffee with a Cop on Friday, July 6 at Brickhouse Cafe, located at 5785 Merle Hay Road. The goal of Coffee with a Cop is for Johnston police officers to get to know you and for you to get to know our officers.

We encourage you to come with specific questions or just be ready to share what is on your mind. In a short time, we hope to get to know you and discover mutual goals that will continue to grow and improve our community.

Birding - Friday, July 13


The Johnston Parks & Recreation Department is hosting a birding workshop for enthusiasts, beginning at 8:00 a.m. The workshop will be led by Dennis Thompson from the Des Moines Audubon. Appropriate clothing and footwear will be required as this will be a walking activity. A set of binoculars and a sense of adventure will be helpful. Those interested in attending can meet at the Terra Park shelter, located at 6300 Pioneer Parkway.

Mental Health Awareness Concert - Saturday, July 14


Come join Project Silence No More, a local non-profit formed by alumni of Johnston High School on Saturday, July 14 at 2:00 p.m. at Terra Park for a community-wide concert entitled, “Mental Health Awareness Concert: Ending the Silence Together.” The concert will feature local Johnston groups, including high school show choir, jazz band, dance groups throughout the community, and a few house bands. Tropical Sno will be present, as well as a photo booth and other activities.

50+ Fun Night - Wednesday, July 18


Join in on the excitement during 50+ fun night on Wednesday, July 18 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Crown Point Community Center, located at 6300 Pioneer Parkway. The seniors will be playing hand & foot, domino's, and pool. Refreshments will be served. The event is free and sponsored by the Johnston Senior Advisory Board.

Join Tony Valdez for Tony Valdez for latin, rock, funk and much more at 7:00 p.m. at Camp Dodge Pool Pavilion complex, 7105 NW 70th Avenue, Johnston. This is the last performance for the Summer Concert Series.

The Johnston Parks Department has brought yoga to Terra Lake and we want you to join in on the free hour of relaxation. Participants are encouraged to bring their own yoga mat and join professional Power Life Yoga instructor Megan Boler on Saturday, July 21 at 8:00 a.m. 

Fishing with a Firefighter - Saturday, July 21


Join the Johnston-Grimes Metropolitan Fire Department (JGMFD) on Saturday, July 21 at Terra Lake for a family, fun fishing event. Registration will begin at 9 a.m. inside Crown Point. There will be fishing poles and tackle for those to use at the event. Residents under sixteen (16) years of age can fish without a license.

We hope you come enjoy the following activities. We have indicated which activities will be inside and outside below.

Safety (inside/outside)
- Inside Crown Point, the Iowa DNR will provide safety tips when you are in and around the water.
- Outside, the JGMFD will provide a water rescue demonstration on Terra Lake. Narration will take place near fishing pier for participants to hear and view.

How to Fish (outside)
- On Terra Lake, the JGMFD will have stations set-up to teach you how to properly cast and the other necessary information you must know before fishing.

Species Booth (inside)
- Learn about the variety of fish species (large-mouth bass, channel catfish and bluegill) at Terra Lake and the regulations you must follow when fishing.

Bait Stations (outside)
- There will be two seperate bait stations set-up around the lake.

Raffle Drawing (outside)
- Businesses who have donated items will be raffled off between 11 to noon.

Lunch (outside)
- Hy-Vee will be serving hot dogs, chips and water from 11 a.m. to noon. Free will donations will be accepted by the Johnston Professional Fire Fighters Local 4835 and used to benefit the community.

Equipment Display
- There will be a Tower Ladder and Rescue Engine displayed in the parking lot. Ambulances will be available, depending on call volume during the event.

Older, Wiser, Livelier Seniors - Tuesday, August 7


The Johnston Senior group will be having an older, wiser, livelier event on Tuesday, August 7 at Jester Park Lodge. The program will feature the "Tale of Iowa’s Soldiers’ & Sailors’ Monument:, with lunch catered by The Radish. Following lunch, the group will travel downtown Des Moines for a drive-by of the Monument on the Capital Grounds. The group will then proceed to the Des Moines Art Center for a guided tour. Signup will be from Wednesday, July 25 through Friday, July 27, from noon to 1:00 PM. Cost is $10.00 per person. The event is restricted to the first 25 individuals and is sponsored by the Johnston Senior Advisory Board.

Mayor's Run for the Trails 5K - August 25


Join fellow community members for the annual Mayor's Run for the Trails 5K. This a fun event that includes a short-sleeve (performance blend) shirt, post-race refreshments, and raffles prizes. There will also be a 1,000 meter fun run around the lake, which begins at 8:00 a.m. The 5K run/walk will begin at 8:15 a.m. The 5K run/walk will be chip timed this year.
