Nature Walking for Wellness - Wednesdays in October

Come explore the beauty of nature at Terra Park and Beaver Creek Natural Resource Area, and get to know your neighbors at the same time. Participants will meet at Terra Park Shelter, 6400 Pioneer Parkway at 11:00 a.m. and head out on a walk on the trails enjoying the plants, trees, birds and insects that call Johnston home. Walk as little or as much as you would like. There will be a prize for best nature photo taken during the walk, so bring those smart phones. Please wear appropriate walking shoes, bug spray and bring a re-fillable water bottle. Binoculars and a smartphone will enhance the experience as well. 

Fire Prevention Week Open house - Saturday, October 13

Join the Johnston-Grimes Metropolitan Fire Department for their annual Fire Prevention Week Open House! National Fire Prevention Week is October 7-13, 2018. To ensure the safety of you and your family, be sure you have an escape plan because "Every Second Counts."

The Open Houses will include a variety of educational hands-on activities for all ages and allows you to see the equipment and talk to the Fire/EMS personnel about fire safety. And, the kids will have the chance to use of the fire hoses. The firefighters will be handing out plastic fire helmets, stickers and coloring books for the kids.

Awareness Training: How To Prepare, Attack And Survive A Physical Attack - October 16, 25 and November 5

Lt. Tompkins of the Johnston Police Department will train attendees on the proper ways to prepare, attack and survive, if ever caught in a dangerous situation.
Where: Johnston Public Library
When: Tuesday, Oct. 16, Thursday, Oct. 25 and Monday, Nov. 5
Time: 6-8 p.m.

In this class, attendees will learn how to create the correct mindset, safety options to know before something happens and how to create muscle memory to react, when stress is at its highest. Lt. Tompkins will train attendees in stressful situations, so they can learn to think clearly and escape. This class will help you overcome the fear of freezing and empower you with active counter measures, so you can get yourself out of a dangerous situation. This class is not force-on-force and will not offer any contact or take-down moves. You will be asked to work with a partner in a controlled setting to simulate the techniques taught during the class.

Ages 14+ (if younger than 16, you must be accompanied by a parent or guardian).

In lieu of charging for the class, we ask that you bring a food item which will then be donated to the Johnston Partnership.

Coffee with a Cop - Wednesday, October 17

Join us for Coffee with a Cop on Wednesday, Oct. 17 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Hy-Vee, located at 5750 Merle Hay Road in Johnston. The goal of Coffee with a Cop is for Johnston police officers to get to know you and for you to get to know our officers. And since this is over the lunch hour, you are welcome to eat lunch with our officers as well.

We encourage you to come with specific questions or just be ready to share what is on your mind. In a short time, we hope to get to know you and discover mutual goals that will continue to grow and improve our community.

Firefighters' Ball - Friday, October 19

The Johnston-Grimes Metropolitan Fire Department invites you to the Firefighters’ Ball on Friday, Oct. 19. Tickets are $50/person, $90/Couple or $360/Table (8 persons). The evening will begin at 5:30 p.m. with a cash bar (complimentary beer and wine), dinner, silent auction, raffles, dancing and a complimentary photographer. Business attire is recommended.

The event will be held at Hilton Garden Inn, located at 8600 North Park Drive in Urbandale. Purchase your tickets today to support the Johnston-Grimes Metropolitan Fire Department and join in on the fun on Oct. 19 as items are auctioned off!

Trick-or-Treat with First Responders - Wednesday, October 24

Join community members and trick-or-treat with first responders on Wednesday, October 24 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Fire station 38, 10225 NW 62nd Ave. The Police and Fire Departments will be handing out treats from their squad cars and fire trucks and will also talk about "safety" when going out on Beggars' Night.

We encourage the children to wear their Halloween costume because the Police and Fire Chiefs will be voting on the best dressed child! Photos will be taken at the event and posted on our Facebook with the winners after the Chiefs cast their vote.

Drug Take-Back Day - Saturday, October 27

The Johnston Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration want to help make homes safe by destroying all expired or unused prescription drugs and over-the-counter medications during a community Drug Take-Back Day on Saturday, October 27.

Johnston police officers will be at the Public Safety Building, located at 6373 Merle Hay Road in Johnston on Saturday, October 27 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to take possession of any expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs. The purpose of the drop off is to help residents remove potentially dangerous substances from their medicine cabinets by establishing a safe collection site. The service is free and anonymous, no questions will be asked.

Any solid dosage form of pharmaceutical products such as tablets, capsules and patches will be accepted. Liquids, needles, sharps, inhalers, syringes, IV solutions and other bio-hazard materials will not be accepted.
