Spring Clean-up - Monday, April 16 and Tuesday, April 17
The City of Johnston has a variety of events planned throughout April to help you dust off winter while improving your home, neighborhood and community. Think of all the things you would like to get rid of during an intense spring cleaning: mattresses, couches, tables, chairs, windows, doors, books, old dishes or box springs. The city-wide Spring Clean-up Event allows residents to dispose of large household items on their regular trash collection day at no additional charge. All smaller items must be placed in bags or boxes.
Please place your items on the curb by 6 a.m. on April 16 (if you live west of 86th Street) or 17 (if you live east of 86th Street). Collection may last through April 18 due to the volume of the collection.
50+ Fun Night - Wednesday, April 18
Come join us for 50+ Fun Night on Wednesday, April 18, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Crown Point Community Center located at 6300 Pioneer Parkway. The Johnston 50+ crowd will be playing a progressive card game which is easy and fun for everyone, pool, shuffleboard and Wii. Refreshments will be served at this free night sponsored by the Johnston Senior Advisory Board.
Earth Day Trash Bash - Friday, April 20
Mark your calendars for Friday, April 20 from 1 to 4 p.m. for the Earth Day Trash Bash. This event is part of a large effort covering 50 project locations throughout Greater Des Moines. Sign up to volunteer to help clean up your community.
We will pick up trash in places like Lew Clarkson Park, Beaver Creek and Johnston Drive. Join us on April 20.
Free Tree Branch and Tire Disposal - April 19 through 21
Johnston residents can drop off branches, limbs and passenger vehicle tires at the Public Works Facility, located at 6400 NW Beaver Drive at no cost. Please bring your ID for proof of residency.
Branches cannot be larger than 18 inches in diameter.
Tree debris will be turned into mulch. Tires must be off the rim; limit 4 tires per household. Tires from businesses are not accepted.
Thursday: 8 a.m. until 8 p.m.
Friday: 8 a.m. until 3:30 p.m.
Saturday: 8 a.m. to noon
Kite Building Workshop - Saturday, April 21
Get ready for the 5th Annual Kites on the Green Festival on Saturday, May 5 by attending a free Kite Making Workshop on Saturday, April 21 at the Johnston Public Library from 2 to 4 p.m. Attendees will receive a free kite-making kit, personal instruction and a chance to test out their new kite. You don't want to miss out!
Drug Take-Back Day - Saturday, April 28
The Johnston Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration want to help make homes safe by destroying all expired or unused prescription drugs and over-the-counter medications during a community Drug Take-Back Day on Saturday, April 28 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Johnston Public Safety Building, located at 6373 Merle Hay Road. Any solid dosage form of pharmaceutical products such as tablets, capsules and patches will be accepted. Liquids, needles, sharps, inhalers, syringes, IV solutions and other bio-hazard materials will not be accepted.
Free Shred Day - Saturday, April 28
Get rid of your old confidential documents in a safe and secure way at Johnston Public Library's free Shred Day. The Shredder company will be in the library parking lot from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. for on-site document destruction with three of their mobile document-shredding vehicles as well as their secure big box truck for document shredding. The Shredder is AAA certified by the National Association for Information Destruction.
Please limit material to be shredded to 3 disposable boxes or containers per household. To expedite shredding, traffic will route from Merle Hay around the library onto Morningside Drive and enter the west parking lot by the Simpson Barn. Please stay in your vehicle and a volunteer will collect your boxes . No registration is necessary. This event is sponsored by AARP in conjunction with Money Smart Week.
Coffee with a Cop - Friday, May 4
Join the Johnston Police Department for Coffee with a Cop on Friday, May 4 from 7:30 to 9 a.m. at Stoney Creek, located at 5291 Stoney Creek Court. The goal of Coffee with a Cop is for Johnston police officers to get to know you, and for you to get to know our police officers.
Kites on the Green - Saturday, May 5
Join us on Saturday, May 5, 2018 from 10 am to 6 pm in Johnston Commons, the grassy area near the Johnston Public Library. This free, public event will feature giant show kite displays, kite contests for people of all ages and abilities, celebrity bol races, kite building, live music and delicious food. JGMFD Pancake Breakfast - Saturday, May 5
Join the Johnston Firefighters Association on Saturday, May 5 from 7-10 a.m. at JGMFD Station 37, located at 200 S. James Street in Grimes for all-you-can-eat pancakes and sausage. The annual Pancake Breakfast will take place inside the Johnston Public Safety Building, located at 6373 Merle Hay Road. Firefighters will be on hand to serve up breakfast.
Mayor's Bike Ride - Friday, May 11
Join Mayor Paula Dierenfeld for the Mayor's Bike Ride, a fun ride on Johnston’s trails, beginning Friday, May 11 at noon. The three-mile loop begins at the Johnston Hy-Vee, located at 5750 Merle Hay Road. We hope to see you there!
Green Days - June 14-17
Green Days is held every year in Johnston Commons, the grassy area located near the Johnston Public Library.
