Mayor's Run for the Trails 5K & 1 Mile Youth Run - Saturday, October 21

Join us for the Mayor’s Run for the Trails 5K and 1-mile youth run on Saturday, Oct. 21. The 5K run will begin at Crown Point, 6300 Pioneer Parkway at 8 a.m. and wind through Terra Park and finish at the Amphitheater. The youth run will begin at 9 a.m. Both races will be timed.

The online registration is now closed, but there are still opportunities to register.

Friday, Oct. 20: Heartland Soles, 5525 Merle Hay Road from 5 to 7 p.m. This is also where registrants can pick-up their packets.

Saturday, Oct. 21: Terra Park, 6300 Pioneer Parkway from 6:30 to 7:30 a.m. Race-day registration is $35, but shirt size is not guaranteed.

Trick-or-Treat with First Responders - Wednesday, October 25

Join community members and trick-or-treat with first responders on Wednesday, Oct. 25 at 10225 NW 62nd Avenue from 5:30 to 7 p.m. The Police and Fire Departments will be handing out treats from their squad cars and fire trucks and will also talk about “safety” when going out on Beggars’ Night. We encourage the children to wear their Halloween costume and bring your pet dressed too. The Police and Fire Chiefs will be voting on the best dressed pet and child! Winners will be posted on our City Facebook page.

Fishing with a Firefighter - Saturday, October 28

Join the Johnston-Grimes Metropolitan Fire Department on Saturday, Oct. 28 at Terra Lake for a fishing event.

Registration will begin at 9 a.m. at the shelter on the northwest side of the lake. Attendees can fish from 9 to 11 a.m. and are encouraged to stay for lunch with the firefighters to watch the water rescue demonstration.There will also be a raffle prize drawing during lunch so be sure to pick up your raffle ticket when you register.

The lake is stocked with largemouth bass, channel catfish and bluegill and they are waiting for your bait! There will be fishing poles and tackle for those to use at the event. Residents under sixteen (16) years of age can fish without a license.

Lunch will be served from 11 a.m. to noon. Free will donations will be accepted by the Johnston Professional Fire Fighters Local 4835 and used to benefit the community.

Drug Take Back Day - Saturday, October 28

The Johnston Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration want to help make your home safe by destroying all expired or unused prescription drugs and over-the-counter medications during Drug Take-Back Day. Johnston officers will be at the Public Safety Building, located at 6373 Merle Hay Road in Johnston on Saturday, October 28 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to take possession of any expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs.

Beggars' Night - Monday, October 30

Be safe and have fun as you trick-or-treat through Johnston’s neighborhoods from 6 to 8 p.m.!

Coffee with a Cop - Friday, November 3

Join us for Coffee with a Cop on Friday, Nov. 3 from 7:30 to 9 a.m. at Village Inn, 8510 Birchwood Ct. in Johnston. The goal of Coffee with a Cop is for Johnston police officers to get to know you and for you to get to know our officers. And this location will allow you to enjoy a slice of pie!

We encourage you to come with specific questions or just be ready to share what is on your mind. In a short time, we hope to get to know you and discover mutual goals that will continue to grow and improve our community.


Firefighters' Ball - Friday, November 10

The Johnston-Grimes Metropolitan Fire Department (JGMFD) invites you to the Firefighters’ Ball to benefit JGMFD, Special Olympics of Iowa and the Food Pantry. Tickets are $40/person or $70/Couple and will be on sale until Friday, Oct. 20.
