Mayor's Bike Ride - Friday, May 12
Join Mayor Paula Dierenfeld for the Mayor's Bike Ride, a fun ride on Johnston’s trails, beginning Friday, May 12 at 11:30 am. The three-mile loop begins at the Johnston Hy-Vee, located at 5750 Merle Hay Road. The free ride ends with a delicious lunch provided by Hy-Vee. We'd love to see you there!
Johnston Farmers' Market Opens - Tuesday, May 16
The Johnston Farmers’ Market is almost here! The first market of 2017 will happen on Tuesday, May 16 from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. The Farmers’ Market will be held every Tuesday afternoon in the City Hall parking lot through early October. Come check out our brand new vendors and a wide selection of locally-grown produce, beautiful art, household items, garden accessories and delicious baked goods! Johnston City Hall is located at 6221 Merle Hay Road. See you there!
Public Works Week - May 21 through 27
This year National Public Works Week celebrates the vital role public works plays in connecting us all together. As the cornerstone of civilization, public works provides, maintains, and improves the structures and services that assure a higher quality of life for our communities. Its streets, roads, sewer systems, and water maintenance keep us healthy and allow our community to grow and prosper. Join us in recognizing our Public Works Department May 21-27!
Coffee with a Cop - Friday, June 2
Join us for Coffee with a Cop on Friday, June 2 from 8:30 to 10 am at AHEPA, located at 6190 NW 59th Court. The goal of Coffee with a Cop is for Johnston police officers to get to know you, and for you to get to know our police officers. Every month, members of the Johnston Police Department are setting aside time to meet to have a real conversation about issues that matter. Come with specific questions for our officers or just ready to share what's on your mind. In a short time, we hope to get to know you and discover mutual goals that will continue to grow and improve our community. We hope to see you in June at AHEPA!
Green Days - June 15 through
The Johnston Green Days festival is a weekend full of activities and has been a big attraction in our community for more than two decades. Highlights include a carnival, parade, live bands, car show, rib night, beer garden, bags tournament, free family movie, free balloon artist, crafts for kids, Bill Riley Talent Search and much more. Green Days is held every year in Johnston Commons --- the grassy area located near the Johnston Public Library.
Come join Johnston Firefighters and Police Officers as they host a special touch-a-truck event during the Green Days celebration! The Johnston Police and Fire Departments will bring a fire engine, ambulance and squad car to Johnston Commons on Saturday, June 17 from 1 to 4 pm. Come meet Johnston’s finest and learn about what they do to keep us all safe! Johnston Commons is located outside the Public Library at 6700 Merle Hay Road.

50+ Fun Night - Wednesday, July 19
Join Johnston seniors for 50+ Fun Night on Wednesday, July 19 from 6:30 to 9:30 pm at Crown Point Community Center, located at 6300 Pioneer Parkway. We will be playing hand and foot, dominos, pool, table shuffleboard and Wii. If you have any other games you would like to play, please come and let us know. Refreshments will be served at this free night sponsored by the Johnston Senior Advisory Board.
Jazz in July - Sunday, July 23
Jazz in July is scheduled for Sunday, July 23 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at Terra Park, located at 6300 Pioneer Parkway. Jazz in July is a month-long festival that celebrates jazz and art with free outdoor concerts across the Des Moines metro. Each concert is billed by Metro Arts Alliance as a mini festival experience complete with vendors with local artists, children's activities and food and drink vendors. Bring a cooler, lawn chairs or blanket and join us for a beautiful night!
Sundae in the Park - Sunday, August 6
Sundae in the Park is your best opportunity to get the kids ready to head back to school! Join the Johnston Community School District, Johnston Community Education and the City of Johnston on Sunday, August 6 for an evening of music and ice cream, with an extra sprinkle of fun!
A variety of youth organizations will be in Simpson Barn providing information on youth activities as we look toward the new school year. Come see what groups your child can become involved with outside of school. City department heads and school administrators will be scooping free ice cream! Come meet them and say hello. Also, hop into the cab of a snow plow! Explore a fire engine! Sit shotgun in a Johnston police vehicle!
All activities are open from 6-8 p.m. on Sunday, August 6 outside the Johnston Public Library at 6700 Merle Hay Road. See you there!
