Lunch and Lures - Thursdays, April 25 through September 26
Join community members for lunch and fish at Terra Lake on Thursdays from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. All anglers are welcome, but minors must be accompanied by adult/guardian.
What: Bring your lunch to the Terra Park fishing pier, and the City of Johnston Parks and Recreation Department will have bait and fishing poles for you to “cast” away your workday for an hour of carefree catch and release fishing.
When: Thursdays from 11:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Through October. 4/25-9/26 *Weather Dependent*
Where: Terra Park Fishing Pier, just below Crown Point Community Center at 6300 Pioneer Parkway
Nature Walking for Wellness - Fridays, April 26 through September 27
Join community members and Johnston Parks and Recreation and walk for wellness while exploring the beauty of nature at Terra Park and Beaver Creek Natural Resource area on Fridays at Terra Park.
When: Fridays at 10:30 a.m. beginning April 26th- September 27th
Where: Meet at Terra Park Shelter at 10:30 a.m. Participants generally walk for an hour.
We will meet at Terra Park Shelter (6300 Pioneer Parkway) and head out on a walk on the trails enjoying the plants, trees, birds and insects that call Johnston home. Walk as little or as much as you would like. There will be a prize for best nature photo taken during the walk, so bring those smart phones.
Please wear appropriate walking shoes, bug spray and bring a re-fillable water bottle. Binoculars and a smartphone will enhance the experience as well.
Free Shred Day - Saturday, April 27
Get rid of your old confidential documents in a safe and secure way at Johnston Public Library’s FREE Shred Day. THE SHREDDER company will be in the Johnston Public Library parking lot, located at 6700 Merle Hay Road on Saturday, April 27 from 9 a.m. to noon for on-site document destruction.
Please limit material to be shredded to 3 boxes or containers per household that need not be returned. No registration is necessary. This event is sponsored by AARP in conjunction with Money Smart Week.
Tiny Tot Triathlon - Sunday, April 28
Join us for an afternoon of kid-friendly activities beginning at 1:00 p.m. at Fire Station 38, located at 10225 NW 62nd Avenue in Johnston. Kids in grades K-6 will participate in a run (choose your distance when you check-in), a fireman’s crawl and finish with a mini Polar Plunge - all to support Special Olympics Iowa!
This event is recreational (not competitive) and encourages kids to get active. Wear athletic clothes and tennis shoes and be sure to bring a swimsuit, towel and a change of clothes for the Polar Plunge. Family members are encouraged to cheer their kid(s) on as they go through the triathlon. Click here to register.
Firefighters Pancake Breakfast - Saturday, May 4
Join the Johnston-Grimes Metropolitan Fire Department on Saturday, May 4 for the association's annual pancake breakfast. The event will be held at Station 37, located at 200 S. James Street in Grimes. Enjoy pancakes, activities and climb on the fire trucks from 7 to 11 a.m.
A free will donation and silent auction will be present at the door. Proceeds used to support Johnston and Grimes communities, events and other items.
Kites on the Green - Saturday, May 4
Join community members during the family-friendly festival featuring giant show kite displays, kite battles, bol races, free kite building, live kids' music with Debbie Doo Wop and Dynamite Dan, sidewalk art, face painting, and delicious food! The event will be held at Johnston Commons, 6700 Merle Hay Road (near the Johnston Public Library). Mayor's Annual Bike Ride - Friday, May 10
Join Mayor Paula Dierenfeld for the Mayor's Bike Ride, a fun ride on Johnston’s trails on Friday, May 10. Interested participants can begin gathering at 11:30 a.m. in the north parking lot at the Johnston Hy-Vee. We will depart at noon. The three-mile loop begins at the Johnston Hy-Vee, located at 5750 Merle Hay Road and will end at the large shelter at Terra Park. Free lunch will be served for those participating in the ride.
Neighborhood Picnic - Tuesday, May 14
Join community members for a picnic at Ray Schleihs Park, 5400 NW 55th Avenue. Food, games, and activities will be available for everyone to enjoy. The event will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
Historical Mural Tours - Sunday, June 9
Simpson House, 6161 Northglenn Drive. Guided tour of the historical murals at Lawson Elementary School and clay tiles at NW 86th Street and NW 62nd Avenue intersection. The guided tour will begin and end at the Simpson House Museum. Participants must have their own transportation. Tours will begin at 1:00 p.m.

Join the library for a 5K race through Terra Park, located at 6400 Pioneer Parkway.

Join community members and City Department Directors as they welcome the students back to the upcoming school year. The department directors will be serving free ice cream for everyone to enjoy. The event will be held at Johnston Commons, located at 6700 Merle Hay Road from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Mayor’s Run for the Trails - Saturday, August 24
Sign up for the 5K run/walk + Kids fun run at Terra Park, located at 6400 Pioneer Parkway. The fun run is .62 miles around Terra Lake and will begin at 8:00 a.m. The 5K run/walk will begin promptly at 8:15 a.m.
50th Anniversary Gala - Friday, September 27
Join community members as they celebrate the 50th anniversary at the Hyperion Field Club, located at 7390 Beaver Drive, beginning at 6:00 p.m. This celebration will feature a fashion show with clothing from 1969; popular music from 1969; appetizers; speaker presenting an overview of what was happening in Iowa, the nation and the world in 1969; and present video from the events.
Art in the Barn - Friday, October 18
Join the community as they celebrate Art in the Barn beginning at 5:30 p.m. The Simpson Barn is located at 6169 Northglenn Drive.
